Take in sweeping views over the Spencer Gulf, encounter local wildlife and discover hidden pockets of natural beauty - all at your own pace.

We kindly ask that you stick to marked tracks, take only photographs and leave nothing but a footprint, helping us preserve this special place for generations to come.

Middlecamp

A window into the past, the Middle Camp ruins are among the most historically significant sites in the Franklin Harbour region. The two-storey Crofters Cottage, built in 1880, stands as a testament to early settler life. Nearby, the shearing shed, constructed in 1882, served as a vital depot where local sheep farmers gathered to shear their flocks.

These buildings were strategically positioned on the landscape. From the nearby hilltop, settlers had a clear view of ships arriving in the bay to collect wool and supplies. This vantage point allowed them to time their trips into Cowell with precision, connecting their remote lifestyle with the wider world.

Wildlife and Birdwatching

Middle Camp is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead, and the familiar calls of magpies and galahs. You may also spot crows, ring-neck parrots, mulga parrots, quails, butcherbirds, and even tiny sparrows flitting between the trees.

The property is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Western-grey and red kangaroos, along with the sturdy euro kangaroo, are commonly seen grazing across the land. Emus wander the open spaces, while foxes and goats occasionally cross the tracks. Reptile lovers will find plenty to admire too—but please take extra care on the roads, as sleepy lizards are often found sunning themselves along the track.

Vegetation

Middle Camp is rich in biodiversity, with 47 native species and only 4 known invasive species. The land is dominated by eucalyptus and sheoak woodlands, which burst into colour at certain times of the year. Rare blooms such as the Flinders Ranges Wattle, Mallee Wattle, and the striking Darke Peak Mallee make the property a unique and beautiful place to explore.

Warning

This track is suitable for vehicles with low range 4WD, a scenic drive with options for more advance 4WD visitors. Please be alert for oncoming traffic, including property workers on motorbikes. If stock are being moved, stop and wait patiently. Above all, drive with care at all times — and enjoy your Middle Camp adventure.
